Once you have created a character, the first thing you want to do after you have killed a monster is pick up everything they drop. There are two reasons for this: the first is that in the early levels you can sell everything and start making money. The second is that as you play the game, you will learn what can be sold at the auction house for serious amounts of money. An example of this is stacks of cloth tend to bring a decent amount of money at the auction house.
Once you have started creating some silver, you need to acquire some bags. Try to get the biggest bags you can. This will allow you to carry more which in turn allows you to stay out questing and killing baddies and collecting loot!
